One to One Reading Volunteer

Are you interested in helping learners improve their reading skills? Do you enjoy reading and want to help others learn to enjoy it too? The education department within the prison are looking for people to work on a one to one basis to help prisoners progress their reading abilities.

You will have the opportunity to work one to one in 30 minute sessions. You would be working with male prisoners in the mornings and female prisoners in the afternoons.

In the mornings one to one support within a classroom setting would also be welcomed in the basic Literacy and ESOL classes starting at 8.30am and running until 11.45am

Library Volunteer

Are you a bookworm? Do you love reading and want to share that with others.

Based in the library, this role would involve helping the librarian by encouraging the prisoners to become engaged with books through a variety of methods, such as displays about particular authors. You would also be working alongside prisoners undertaking normal library tasks such as restocking bookshelves, repairing and covering books.

Gym Volunteer

Are you interested in helping others keep fit?

The gym within the prison would love to welcome volunteers with fitness qualifications to help them run a range of activities from circuit training and exercise classes to hip hop and street dance. A range of activities are offered on a Friday afternoon, specifically to help those with disabilities to use the gym, and also on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Multi Skills Workshop Volunteer

 

Are you interested in DIY, plumbing or enjoy carpentry?

The education department within the prison are looking for people with a range of skills to help demonstrate these in the Female Multi Skills Workshop

Sessions are from 8.15am to 11.45 am or 1.30pm to 4.45pm daily Mon-Friday
 

Holistic Therapist

Are you a qualified holistic therapist with some time to spare?

If so the Beauty Salon within the Prison would love to welcome you as a volunteer to support the delivery of treatments in the mornings and perhaps teach your skill in the afternoons.
 
The salon is particularly interested in being able to offer Pilates, Yoga, meditation and relaxation classes.

Beauty Therapist

Are you a qualified beauty therapist with some time to spare?

If so the Beauty Salon within the Prison would love to welcome you as a volunteer to carry out treatments in the mornings and perhaps teach your skill in the afternoons.

Hairdresser

Are you a qualified hairdresser with some time to spare? If so the Hair Salon within the Prison would love to welcome you as a volunteer to carry out treatments in the mornings and perhaps teach your skill in the afternoons.

The salon caters for European & Afro Caribbean hair types and offers a range of treatments from cutting and colouring to braiding and relaxing. They are also interested in volunteers with barbering skills.

 

Storybook Mums and Dads scheme Volunteer.


Based in the library of the prison, this scheme allows Mums and Dads the opportunity to record stories to their children onto CD, which are then given to the families (as seen on Secret Millionaire)

Could you spare a few hours a week to help with the editing of these CD's? Full training will be given.

 

Prison Gardens Support Volunteer


Do you have a keen interest in gardening?

In this role you will work alongside inmates and officers in the prison gardens
helping to maintain the gardens and to work in the greenhouses where flowers and produce are grown for the prison and for sale. There are also opportunities to offer support with the gardening club.
 
Work in the gardens includes digging, weeding, planting, sowing seeds, tending to produce, making up hanging baskets and boxes of fruit and veg.

A gardening club runs on Thursday evenings between 6-7.30pm tending a small allotment area
 
Sessions are from 8.15am to 11.45 am or 1.30pm to 4.45pm daily Mon-Fri.

Mums and Tots Singing Group
  
 Do you know the song "The Wheels On The Bus" or " Itsy Bitsy Spider?" Then perhaps you could encourage our Mum and Tots group to join in. Held in a delightful cosy and relaxed sensory room this small group meets for one hour a week to shake rattles and bang drums. The group meets once a week between 10.30-11.30am. All the necessary equipment is provided and you would be teamed with a fellow volunteer.
    

Mother and Baby Unit Volunteer

Assisting with messy play sessions and general play activities in the Play area-daily 8.30-11.30am and 1.30-5.00pm when the weather is bad

Interactive sessions in Mother and Baby unit. Run on Saturday mornings between 10am and midday.

Play area volunteer

Could you encourage children to enjoy reading or colouring, sit and play games, racing cars or dress the dolls. Our Play area would like lively volunteers with a keen interest in supporting play with youngsters. While the children are being kept amused their parents and families have chance for a grown up chat. This helps to make visiting time a nice experience. Hours are Tuesday-Friday 2.00pm until 4.30pm and Saturday-Monday 1.30-4.00pm

Family Day volunteer

Family days help to maintain contact between prisoners and their children, the role of volunteers is to serve drinks to the visitors and prisoners, help with the buffet lunch, participate in organised activites for the children such as face painting or cake decoration, and tidying up at the end. The day starts at 10.30am and finishes around 3pm with opportunities to volunteer for all or part of the session.

Education volunteers

The Education Department welcomes volunteers to act as learning support assistants to encourage the learners and to assist the tutors in the delivery of various classes.You could be helping with a variety of subjects, ranging from basic literacy, ESOL and numeracy to I.T. and art.

Session times are daily Monday to Thursday am and pm, plus Friday am. Volunteers need to be in the gatehouse for collection at 8am or 1pm respectively.

Jailbirds Admin volunteer

Are you an organised person who enjoys working methodically at admin tasks? Do you have a day or two half days to spare on a Monday and Tuesday?

Jail Birds is a social enterprise established by Sodexo Justice Services at HMP YOI Peterborough which employs the prisoner workforce to create a range of more than 200 greetings card designs giving female inmates useful work experience to support them in getting a job when they are released from prison.

Based within the prison, in the office of the business development manager, your role would be to support this enterprise by recording sales on line and dealing with the cash from the sales by counting and bagging ready for banking.

As well supporting prisoner rehabilitation, you will also be doing your bit for charity as proceeds from the sales of Jail Birds cards go to STOP Hunger, Sue Ryder and Help for Heroes.
